Temporary Disconnect

DSCF6093

There was a low-flying vulture in this sky shot and I missed it. That’s the way it’s been lately. Off target all around.

DSCF6107

Can anyone identify this odd, thorny shrub I found during a walk on campus this week? I brought a tick back to the office that day and I was thankful that a co-worker flicked it off my back before it held on. Thirty-six hours later, that tick that found its way back to me. That’s incredible. When it appeared out of nowhere on my wrist, I walked it outside and heartlessly beat it to smithereens. The flushing toilet option came to mind but I heard they’ll crawl back up the bowl to get you.

My state of mind isn’t important. I call it temporary disconnect. Others I know refer to the same disorder as a prolonged brain fart. Whatever.

Our pond was professionally cleaned and power washed a few weeks ago. Before I turned the power on, I took a snapshot of the biological filter behind the waterfall.

and lily roots in the shallow end, about a foot under.

It was sub-freezing that week. Two feet under, stunned fishcicles waited for high noon under the sun.

A friend joined me while I admired the brilliant clarity of the pond water. Through all that cleaning, life in the pond remains.

In the bottom of my handbag, there are a few pieces of nicotine gum left to chew. I will be completely off the drug by this weekend, actually. I hope I don’t blow up or something. Been Lil’ Non-Smoky for two months today. Maybe by finally ridding of the bit of nicotine absorbed into my bloodstream every day will help bring back my smooth organizational skills and ability to multi-task. Boy, I dislike that noun/verb so much. I’m going to take this further.

Multi-task. Ugh. A word that’s terribly over-used. Its meaning is overrated, too, but it’s what makes the world go around, I guess. Fortunately for us, all those multi-taskers out there save the day. But I really want to know why it’s so damned important to be a super MTer?

“This position requires blah blah blah…and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment, accurately meet deadlines, blah blah blah...”

Good MTers should be proud of themselves but also know that chronic MTing can be hazardous to their health.

DSCF6178

Our lives should be gentler.

And easier. Every night should be American Idol night with the dogs.

Somebody move over!

Good luck getting a good seat to enjoy your show. It looks like you at least won't be lonesome. tee hee..

I can't tell you how proud I am of you for not smoking. They say it is one of the most difficult things to give up. You should be proud of yourself. Keep it up.

I think a man invented the term multi tasking. He found himself doing 2 things at once and was amazed. Of course women have been doing it since the beginning of time and not making a big deal about it.:}

I feel for you aout the tick-ugh gives me the creepies. You pond looks so inviting even if it is still frigid. Love the refections.

Hang in there, Mary. I'm sure you will get plugged back in soon.(Way to go non-smoker!)

I like Beckie's comment. We women have been multitasking for-ever! And nobody noticed until now! Temporary disconnect can be blamed on the full moon last night. I felt really "off" the whole day. Hubby too.

I didn't realize you had to powerwash your pond? Good thing you get someone in to do this. Does it ever look clean!

Adorable dog yoga poses in this and the earlier post. Did you ever get a seat on the couch?

KGMom said...

Oh, I love all those doggies faces looking at you! Sweet.
Where do the fish go when the pond is being cleaned?
As for multi-tasking,my premise is that we don't really multi-task (that is literally doing several things at once)--we SEQUENTIALLY task. Some of us are just really good at switching gears very very quickly.
MOST importantly--congrats on the smoking cessation battle. Fight on!

Beckie has already said what I was thinking--we women were the original multi-taskers! Maybe the ads should just say "Women only need apply," but of course that would probably be against the law.

Congratulations on keeping up the clean lungs for two whole months--that is such an awesome accomplishment.

My brain isn't wired properly right now either...I love the "fishicles," LOL. So...who's your pick for Idol winner this year?

Mary said...

JG, no I did not get a seat on the couch, but that's OK. Mr. Biggins is a guest :o)

Donna, the fish are netted gently into a holding tank while the work is being done. They do well! The new water is treated and life goes on. It's a once-a-year cleanout. Better for a pro to do it as it would kill our old backs.

That last picture looks like a great "uni-task!" Just you and the pups, watching TV. That's the life.

I love this post, love this post.

I'm intrigued and a bit unsettled by the notion of power washing a pond. That would take away the algae, but also all the good nitrifying bacteria that naturally keep algae down. And in practice could start a cycle of algae blooms which seemingly can only be eliminated by another power washing. Then everything starts at zero again, but the algae has the quick growth advantage and returns. Do barley bales not work for your pond?

Some muck is good...

I dunno Mare, whether you should quit the nicogum or not. I like your free association. As to multitasking, I am an unapologetically linear person. Start something, finish it. And yet life, work and 'puters are constantly tugging at our sleeves, aren't they?

the last photo melts my heart. I want to plop down in the middle of that dogpile and get some kisses. We watch Idol to the soundtrack of Chet chewing Nylabones on our shoulders and laps.

I pick Adam to win. I hate his nasty Twiggy hairdo, but the boy has it all. Phoebe will love Anoop long after he's been yanked offstage. She weeps when he's in peril.

Yes, the moon. It has been a real devil this cycle. Nothing like waking up at 3 and revving to go...all week!

It's the moon, Mary!

hey I like that first photo and I like the ice!

The birds and adorable dogs in your photos don't appear to be MTing, and they look happy. I think multi-tasking is overrated and life in the slow lane is more enjoyable.

Kim said...

Congrats on being smoke free. Quite the accomplishment!

Love your mocker and pond pictures.

I tend to hate all "buzzwords" and multi-tasking is no exception. What it actually means is, "someone who can't stay focused on anything." Donna had it right on...it's sequential tasking that is important.

I just loved the doggie picture. The lickers seem quite happy to have company.

Your post spoke to me in all levels! At times I wish I could just be that fish-iscle! Yeah, MT'ers...story of my life. Have to get off the tread mill of life and seeing your pictures help :) Yes, when women work- we don't need a sign!!! ('men at work')

One more- what exactly is the paint color for your living room right off your dining room? I love that shade...I have a wall that for two years has gone without because I can't choose. I love ALL your paint colors...what is the green one, too?

Congratulations on your two-month anniversary! You really should be proud of yourself.

Your photos are gorgeous, as always.

How funny about that tick. It was attracted to you :) Worth beating it to death though... fun!

Sorry about that disconnect... things will go back to normal. Congrats on being smoke-free for so long!!! Keep it up!

My idea of multi-tasking is drinking a glass of wine while I edit photos. Other than that, I avoid it when ever possible.

Hey, did say, "Nice picture?" That goes without saying. I always see great images here! (See talk about not multi-tasking, I can't even be a smart-ass and compliment the photos in the same comment.)

I love the shot of the fish all packed in tight and cozy. And I adore the last photo of those sweet doggies. What a treat to see those faces.

Somebody move over - LOL!!!!! Doesn't look like any of them are ready to move. Anyway, your photos continue to bring such joy, they're so beautiful.
Multi-tasking. Uh huh. I also hate that term. It's what we women have been doing since day one.

Ha! Your multitasking post is very timely. Check out today's post on Stuff Unemployed People Like. (This is our house's latest must-read blog. Josh has been on the dole since December, so he likes to see where he fits in.)

I admit to being an intense multitasker, but I'm pretty intense when I get down to business anyway, so it's appropriate. I used to feel like an octopus putting out 8 different fires all day when I managed crazy fashion editors. Wrangling 2 dogs, 1 cat, and 3 chickens is much easier, but not necessarily less stressful.

Hi Mary! Congrats for being non-smoking for two months. As a smoker myself, I know how hard it is to quit. You've done good.

I love your pond. If I had one, I don't think I would be able to leave it's side. The tranquility would be good for the soul.

That's funny about the tick and not flushing it. Awhile ago I watched a show about a snake wracking havoc with the plumbing in an apartment building. People would find it in their toilet only to have the thing slither back down into the pipes. They finally got the thing and it was hugh. To this day, I cannot sit down until I make sure bowl clear.

What a picture that last one is. Brings a smile. Lisa

Your pond looks good Mary. I'm thinking about digging a small wildlife pond in the backyard this summer--I need more tasks on my backyard multi-tasking list!
I LOLd at your last photo--those doggehs have sure got a wonderful life at your house!

I just love your photos and the way you write. Thank you for the smile to my work day!

I stumbled upon your blog and saw that you wanted to know the name of this thorny bush. I'm thinking it looks like Poncirus trifoliata 'Flying Dragon'. Just a guess...

Thank you, Amie.
