Dragonflies

DSCF8069

There is a dragonfly convention on the pond. I’ve never seen so many at once.

No stories today - just dragonflies.

DSCF8435

I want to share the fun I had with Blue Dashers and the macro setting.

It’s no wonder Monet and Swarovski have dragons and damsels in their brooch lines.

DSCF8461

Aren’t they fabulous?

Blue Dasher males are very territorial. I didn’t know that until now.

DSCF8217

Female Blue Dasher. If my ID is incorrect, let me know, please?

Mid-day under the highest sun and evening when mosquitoes gather are the best times to find them.

DSCF8453

I chuckle when they fly away suddenly and quickly return to the same look-out post.

Eyes and heads scan incoming from all directions, ready for combat.

DSCF8472

I’m photographing dorsals now and will move around in front of their eyes when they know me better.

Mosquitoes aren’t a problem for us when an army of dragonflies is on duty.

DSCF8477

There are more species around. I’ll find them.

What great photos of the dragonflies. They are so difficult to photograph since they are usually flying around. That first photo is a knockout with the bright blue and yellow together.

Great shots, Mary!
Right on about Monet and Swarovski. You just can't get the same color combinations in other bugs.

Great pictures! Dragonflies are so hard to capture and you got a bunch. I find that just when I'm set up and ready to start shooting, they fly off.

I've got dragons, too, Mary--aren't they fun??!!
I love the colors, too--and the way they turn their heads and watch you.
I'm not good at IDs, but I've found a very helpful site--for the hundreds more you're probably finding....

These are beautiful, Mary! I haven't seen a dragonfly here yet this year, so thanks for sharing these. I hope work slows down a little for you soon so that you have more time to get outside; I'm waiting for the sequel to the bug porn:)

I am so jealous--you captured these beautiful creatures perfectly.

Dear Mary,
The Dragonflies and Damselflies are incredible bugs...There are so many different varieties...like birds...
All your photos are great. I really enjoy macro photography.
The butterflies are out too...
Summertime and the living is good!

Absolutely beautiful, Mary! I rarely seem to be able to catch dragonflies before they zoom off to their next brief perch, and when I do manage to snap a shot or two they never turn out as nice as these. Your macro work is just wonderful!

These are absolutely divine. They bring back memories of a day at Star Ranch when I was in the third grade. I've been turning a post over in my mind about the 10 happiest moments of my life. This was one of them. The dragon flies were a welcome part of the adventure. Blue and beautiful, my brother told me they wouldn't sting.

Simply gorgeous! Aren't they supposed to be good luck? ... and you have an army of them around you.

How lucky can you get?

Vickie said...

Gorgeous images, Mary! I enjoy dragonflies as much as butterflies. It was blue dashers that prompted me to buy three, not just one, dragonfly books!

Vickie said...

ps, yes that does appear to be a female. They are gorgeous too with bronze to reddish eyes.

I don't know how you do it! These glitter like jewels.
